Division 03 · Reinforcing

Rebar takeoffs that turn structural schedules into tons you can buy

Reinforcing steel hides its cost in laps, hooks, ties and accessories that general notes mention but plans never draw. Our estimators read footing schedules, beam and column details and slab notes, build bar lists by size and length, convert them to weight with standard lb/ft values, and add the chairs, dowels and mesh needed to hold the cage in place. You receive tonnage ready for a fabricator quote and placing hours ready for your crew.

Overview

Where rebar quantities really come from

Rebar is sold by the ton but measured by the foot. Each bar is counted from the structural schedules and typical details, listed by mark, size, length and shape, then multiplied by its unit weight: a #4 bar weighs 0.668 pounds per foot, a #8 weighs 2.670. The sum, grouped by size, becomes the number a fabricator quotes against.

Most of the risk sits in what the drawings only imply. Lap splice lengths come from the general notes and change with bar size, concrete strength and top-bar position. Hooks, standard bends, stirrup and tie spacing, corner bars, dowels into walls and columns, and extra bars around openings are derived from details and the governing ACI 318 provisions.

Accessories round out the package: bar chairs, high chairs and bolsters sized to cover depth, tie wire, spacers, couplers and welded wire reinforcement in sheets or rolls. We tie placing labor to bar size and congestion, since a mat of #9 bars at six inches goes down faster than a column cage of #5 ties.

An estimating desk that behaves like an extension of your team, not a software subscription.

Bar lists built by size and shape code

so your fabricator can quote without recounting any element.

Lap lengths derived from ACI 318 and the

How our estimating process works

Four steps from upload to a bid-ready estimate, with a senior estimator signing off before anything leaves our desk.

  1. 1

    Upload plans and scope

Send your drawings, specifications and bid invitation through the secure upload form. We confirm scope, deadline and a fixed price within two business hours.

  2. 2

    Digital quantity takeoff

Estimators measure every item from calibrated plans in Bluebeam and PlanSwift, color-coding each layer so quantities can be traced back to the drawing.

  3. 3

    Pricing and labor

Quantities are priced with location-adjusted material costs, crew productivity rates and equipment, then marked up to your overhead and profit targets.

  4. 4

    Senior review and delivery

A second estimator audits quantities and pricing, documents assumptions and exclusions, and delivers your Excel workbook, PDF summary and marked-up plans.

FAQ

Rebar Estimating FAQs

Straight answers on scope, turnaround, pricing and deliverables.

How do you convert rebar length to tons?

We list each bar by size and length, multiply by its standard unit weight such as 0.668 lb/ft for a #4 or 2.670 lb/ft for a #8, and total by size. Pounds divide by 2,000 for short tons. Scrap and hooks are shown on separate lines so the tonnage matches what a fabricator will invoice.

Do you include lap splices when the drawings do not show them?

Yes. Lap lengths come from the general notes or, if none are given, from ACI 318 development length provisions for the stated concrete strength and bar position. We list the assumption used so your detailer or engineer can confirm it before you commit to a tonnage.

Can you take off welded wire mesh as well as bars?

Yes. Welded wire reinforcement is measured in square feet from slab sections and notes, with lap allowances at sheet and roll edges, then converted to sheets or rolls. It is quantified separately from bar tonnage because the supplier and installation method are different.

Is rebar detailing included in the estimate?

We produce a takeoff-level bar list and tonnage, not stamped shop drawings. Detailing cost is carried as an allowance per ton so your bid includes it, and the bar list gives your detailer a verified starting quantity to check against their final placing drawings.

Do you price placing labor, or only material?

Both are available. Placing and tying hours are based on bar size, congestion and element type, so a heavy foundation mat and a congested column cage are not priced at the same rate. If you only need material tonnage, we deliver the bar list alone.

How quickly can a rebar takeoff be completed?

Footing-only sets and small commercial buildings are usually returned within 24 hours. Full multi-story structural sets with post-tensioned and conventional reinforcing take 48 hours or more, and we confirm the date after reviewing the drawing count and detail density.
